Vineyard Foiling Project

Whole_Boat.png

The Goal

Build a hydro-foiling sailboat that has never been done before: a one to two person dinghy with V foils and a large asymmetric spinnaker. Make it fast and easy for anyone to start sailing quickly.

The Project thus Far

Taking inspiration from modern IMOCA 60s, I've modeled in Rhino3D a 15 foot sailboat built to fly. The wide planing hull aims to get the boat out of the water quickly, and V shaped foils will allow it to self-stabilize as it flies over the surface of the water. From my CAD models I utilized my school's design workshop to CNC cut Coosa board pieces to make up the frame and deck of the boat. I then took the pieces to my home on Martha's Vineyard (as well as a 20 ft long mast on my car's roof) where I have been assembling the boat, fiberglassing it together, and compiling the necessary hardware. As of now, I have to finish fiberglassing the outside of the hull and building the foils. I'm aiming to have it flying by the middle of June.
